Position Summary:

The Housekeeper at Barrie Family Hospice of Elgin plays a vital role in ensuring a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for all individuals, families, staff, volunteers, and visitors. Reporting directly to the Finance and Operations Manager, the Housekeeper is

responsible for delivering high-quality housekeeping services in accordance with the standards and values of Barrie Family Hospice of Elgin, and in compliance with all relevant health, safety, and infection control guidelines.

The Housekeeper ensures that all areas of the facility are clean, sanitized, and well-maintained, and supports a home-like atmosphere that respects the dignity and comfort of residents receiving end-of-life care.

Key accountability of this position includes, but are not limited to:
General Housekeeping and Environmental Cleaning – 

  • Perform daily cleaning routines throughout the Hospice, including disinfection of high-touch surfaces, resident rooms, communal areas, family lounges, staff areas, administrative offices, and bathrooms.
  • Conduct general outdoor cleaning tasks, including sweeping or salting sidewalks, cleaning private patios, and collecting garbage.
  • Clean and sanitize surfaces such as walls, baseboards, ceilings, ledges, light fixtures, fans, vents, windows, doors, and mirrors on a rotating schedule.
  • Maintain tidy, welcoming entrances by sweeping, mopping, and changing entrance mats as required.
  • Conduct deep cleaning and terminal cleaning of resident rooms, ensuring all surfaces, furnishings, and equipment are sanitized per infection prevention and control protocols.
  • Use and store cleaning supplies and chemicals in accordance with WHMIS guidelines.

Laundry and Linen Services –

  • Collect, sort, launder, and store housekeeping linens and bedding (e.g., cleaning cloths, mop heads, pillowcases, blankets).
  • Ensure laundering processes follow infection prevention and control protocols.
  • Identify and report any damaged linen items for replacement.
  • Restock rooms and designated linen storage areas to ensure consistent availability of clean supplies.

Equipment and Facility Maintenance Support –

  • Clean and maintain housekeeping equipment, including washing machines, dryers, vacuum cleaners, and carts.
  • Empty and clean dryer lint filters regularly and ensure equipment is in safe, operational condition.
  • Assist with minor maintenance tasks, such as unclogging toilets, replacing light bulbs, and performing other basic repairs, as needed and within the scope of provided training.
  • Perform regular maintenance and cleaning of the waterfall.
  • Report any malfunctioning or broken equipment promptly to the Finance and Operations Manager.

Waste and Recycling Management –

  • Collect and dispose of general waste and recycling in accordance with Hospice of Elgin’s environmental and workplace safety protocols.
  • Clean and disinfect waste receptacles and designated storage areas regularly to prevent contamination and control odours.
  • Maintain knowledge and perform appropriate segregation, containment, and transport for all waste types (including biohazardous waste) to ensure safety for all.

Additional Duties and Organizational Support –

  • Assist in the development and review of housekeeping-related policies, procedures, and checklists to support quality improvement.
  • Provide support to volunteers, ensuring understanding of procedures and safety expectations.
  • Monitor housekeeping supplies and inventory levels; prepare and submit supply requests in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Support the setup and movement of furniture and equipment for resident care, meetings, or events, including beds, seating, and décor.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Finance and Operations Manager, to support the overall cleanliness and comfort of the facility.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent required.
  • Minimum one (1) year of housekeeping experience, preferably in a hospital, hospice, long-term care, or community care setting.
  • Strong dedication to the Noble Purpose of Barrie Family Hospice of Elgin and commitment to and experience in compassionate end-of-life care.
  • Knowledge of relevant Ontario health and safety legislation, infection prevention and control practices.
  • Excellent communication, active listening, and people skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also contributing effectively to an interdisciplinary team.
  • Physical ability to perform repetitive tasks and lift/move equipment and furniture as required.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced, emotionally intense environment.
  • Experience working with and supporting volunteers is an asset.

Additional Requirements:

  • Proof of vaccination will be required.
  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Records Check
  • Willingness and ability to work a variety of shifts, including weekends and holidays, based on Hospice needs.
