Position: School Age Childcare Program – Assistant Educator
Reports to: Childcare Coordinators and Director of School Age Childcare
Responsibilities:
- Co-plan and facilitate recreation and learning opportunities for children based on emergent curriculum and inquiry-based play that contribute to the care, growth, and healthy development of children
- Complete daily documentation to support How Does Learning Happen framework and pedagogy as needed
- Complete daily records/logbook and/or documentation as outlined by the YWCA and Ministry of Education in a timely fashion
- Supervise children at all times to ensure their safety and well-being
- Adhere to Individualized Support Plans and Individualized Medical Plans; Report any contraventions to School Age Program Coordinator to follow up
- Assist with hygiene care of children with Individualized Support Plans as needed (ie. feeding, changing, toileting, etc.)
- Ensure all medications on site are either on the child’s person or stored in the designated area
- Ensure all safety requirements are met for the children under your care
- Follow all health and safety guidelines by the Local Medical Officer of Health, including wearing appropriate PPE at all times and maintaining sanitization
- Employ appropriate and logical consequences and positive behavior guidance techniques as outlined by the YWCA Program Statement, Policies, and Ministry of Education
- Report and document details of all serious occurrences to appropriate personnel immediately
- Involve YWCA School Age Childcare Coordinator or Director to problem solve challenges with children, staff, or school
- Identify, report, and document when a child is in a situation of perceived risk, or actual neglect / abuse
- Meet with families, TVDSB, All Kids Belong, and other Stakeholders, providing feedback and documentation when necessary
- Represent the YWCA with professionalism, kindness, and respect in all capacities
- Serve snacks as required and adhere to Safe Food Handlers Guidelines for serving and storage
- Participate in staff meetings with your school team
- Be responsible for your own attitude, and the environment you create
- Be a team player who focuses on strengths and promotes a positive work environment
- Participate in three Professional Development Opportunities per year
Additional Requirements:
- Must provide the names of 2 references for the purpose of an employment reference check
- Must pay for and provide an original copy of a Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening every five years after hire
- Must Provide Proof of First Aid/CPR Certification
- If you are a Registered Early Childhood Educator, you must maintain and provide confirmation of such Registration annually
- All staff are responsible for reading and keeping current on: YWCA Personnel, School Age Childcare Policies and Procedures, as well as current best practices for Educators under the provincial pedagogy “How Does Learning Happen?”
- Attend all staff meetings and training sessions as required.
- Access to reliable transportation twice daily is required for all schools as public transportation is not available prior to the beginning of program hours in St. Thomas, or at all to and from rural Schools
- Participate in three Professional Development Opportunities per year
- During illness, contact supply staff to cover your shift, and notify On-Call Coordinator

Working Conditions:
- Primarily based on TVDSB schools
- Outdoor programming is required daily in all weather
- Attend meetings in office at 16 Mary St. W or designated area
- Physical Needs: Lifting, toileting, transporting goods and materials as required
Qualifications
Skills:
- Build and maintain caring, responsive, inclusive relationships with and between co-workers, children, families and the community
- Co-create, facilitate, and reflect upon inquiry and play based programming
- Observe and document through multiple mediums including using digital technology
- Professional written and verbal communication
- Demonstrate strong literacy skills to read instructions, product labels, policies, logbooks, reports, inspections, etc. and complete daily paperwork & pedagogical documentation
- Problem solve to quickly make decisions regarding health, safety, behaviors all in compliance with YWCA policies
- Have a sense of humor when know when to use it appropriately
- Support children through positive behavior guidance techniques
- Understand child growth and development
- Organization and Time Management
- Demonstrate reliability and commitment through attendance, punctuality, and enthusiasm for work
Education and Employment Requirements:
- Post-Secondary Education in Early Childhood Education, Child and Youth Work, Recreation and/or equivalent training or related experience preferred
- Minimum two years related experience working with school aged children preferred
- Must hold a current First Aid and CPR Certificate Level C from a recognized provider
- Must have Safe Food Handlers Certificate
- Must have satisfactory Police Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening from within six months
