Job Summary
We are seeking a skilled Tool & Die Maker to support production operations by maintaining and repairing tooling to ensure optimal performance and reliability. In this role, you will perform preventative maintenance, troubleshoot tooling issues, and maintain cast and trim tools in proper operating condition to minimize downtime and support efficient production. The successful candidate will follow all safety standards, applicable codes, and company procedures while maintaining a clean and organized toolroom using a 5S approach. This position also requires maintaining accurate maintenance records, supporting breakdown repairs, and contributing to training and skill-transfer initiatives for apprentices.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain and support production tooling, including cast and trim tools, to ensure reliable operation and minimal production downtime.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and repair activities on all tools and dies.
  • Troubleshoot tooling issues and perform breakdown repairs to restore equipment to proper operating condition.
  • Operate machining equipment including ID/OD grinders, lathes, milling machines, and radial arm drills as required to repair or modify tooling components.
  • Use precision measuring instruments, jigs, fixtures, and hand/power tools to inspect, repair, and maintain tooling.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, tool modifications, and repairs.
  • Ensure the toolroom and equipment are maintained in a clean and organized condition using 5S principles.
  • Follow all health and safety policies, procedures, and OH&S regulations, ensuring work is performed safely and efficiently.
  • Comply with ISO, IATF, and customer-specific quality requirements when performing all work activities.
  • Apply applicable government codes, standards, and regulatory requirements in tooling maintenance and repair activities.
  • Participate in training initiatives and skill-transfer programs, supporting the development and progress of apprentices.
  • Demonstrate strong judgment, reliability, and effective verbal and written communication in daily operations.
  • Perform other duties or special projects as assigned to support production and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

Preferred Skills

  • Strong ability to operate machining equipment, including ID/OD grinders, lathes, milling machines, and radial arm drills.
  • Proficiency in the use of hand tools, bench equipment, portable power tools, jigs, and fixtures.
  • Skilled in using precision measuring instruments to ensure accuracy and quality of tooling components.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain cast and trim tools in a manufacturing environment.
  • Solid understanding of preventive maintenance practices for tooling and production equipment.
  • Knowledge of ISO, IATF, and customer-specific quality requirements.
  • Strong awareness of occupational health and safety regulations (OH&S Act) and safe work practices.
  • Ability to interpret and comply with government codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Good problem-solving and analytical skills to identify and resolve tooling issues efficiently.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality standards in all work performed.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated reliability, sound judgment, and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain accurate maintenance and tooling records.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and workplace organization (5S practices).

Qualifications

  • Certificate of Qualification and/or Certificate of Apprenticeship as a Tool & Die Maker, Mold Maker, or General Machinist (or equivalent skilled trade certification).
  • Proven experience working as a licensed skilled tradesperson in a manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain, repair, and troubleshoot production tooling, including cast and trim tools.
  • Experience operating machine shop equipment such as grinders, lathes, milling machines, and drill presses.
  • Solid understanding of preventive maintenance practices and tooling repair processes.
  • Knowledge of ISO, IATF, and customer-specific quality requirements within a manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OH&S) and applicable safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of applicable government codes, standards, and regulatory requirements, with the ability to stay current with updates.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, tooling specifications, and maintenance documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team-oriented manufacturing environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain accurate maintenance and tooling records.
